09 Apr Stann Champion–Chicago Music Awards “Lifetime Achievement Award”
Northwest Side musician Stann Champion is being honored. Chicago Music Awards (CMA) has selected him for a “Lifetime Achievement Award for more than 35 years of contributions to the music industry and community.”
Stann says when he received the news, “I was caught by surprise.” He is especially pleased to be honored with “other great Chicagoans,” CMA selectees Grammy Award-winning Ella Jenkins and Lenin “Doc” Pellegrino, owner of the Kingston Mines Blues Club.
The award won’t change anything in his music or life. He has been busy serving music and communities since 1978 and will continue to do so, but he feels that this is great news for all those he has worked with and served.
Stann also won awards when the CMA first started in 1982.
Some of Stann’s recent music activities include a 2015 CD release of TimeBless, a 2016 performance at United Center for the Chicago Bulls’ celebration of their 50th year, his continuing ZipCodeTour2016, in which he appears solo and with his ensemble Roots Rock Society, and his selection as an “Elixir Strings Artist” for 2016.
The community remains a top priority. He has appeared as The Human Get Well Card, performing for patients and their families at Swedish Covenant Hospital, La Rabida Children’s Hospital, and University of Chicago Hospitals. He has been awarded the 6th District Community Gresham 6 Award, and has established Camp Champ, a mentoring program at Chicago’s Arthur Ashe Elementary School.
As if this weren’t enough, he also hosts the Stann Champion radio program on WNUR 89.3 FM (reaching 3 million listeners).
The 35th anniversary of the Chicago Music Awards will be celebrated on July 1, 2016. Awards will be given in more than 40 categories. The ceremony will be hosted in an elegant fashion, Rose Garden style, on Union Park’s greens. It will coincide with the four-day 24th International Festival of Life (IFOL).
Stann will appear at the Festival of Life with a solo performance, show time to be announced.
