Photographs featuring four decades of music’s biggest names go on view
The Ed Paschke Art Center is pleased to announce the opening of Superstars, a career retrospective of legendary rock photographer Paul Natkin.
Natkin has received international acclaim for his dramatic images of some of music’s greatest talents. Shot over the last forty years of his career, Superstars features a crossgenerational range of musicians, such as Miles Davis, Johnny Cash, Ice Cube and Guns and Roses.
Beginning Friday, May 1, 2015 and running through August 2nd, 2015, the Ed Paschke Art Center will exhibit over twenty of Natkin’s most iconic photographs of musicians. The images, selected by the artist himself, are roughly divided between color and black and white photographs of explosive onstage performances, and black and white portraits that get upclose and personal with his subjects. Natkin’s ability to capture the excitement of live performance in his concert photography, and record raw emotion in his portrait photography is unparalleled. Paul Natkin is Chicago’s most notable rock photographer.

His father, photojournalist Robert Natkin, inspired him to pursue photography, and he began shooting live concerts in the mid 1970s. His photographs have appeared on
countless magazine covers, including Newsweek, Time, People, Playboy, Ebony and Entertainment Weekly, as well as on numerous album covers for artists such as Ozzy Osbourne, Alanis Morissette and Buddy Guy, among others.
Natkin has also been the subject of solo exhibitions at both the Elmhurst Historical Museum and the Chicago Cultural Center, but Superstars is the first exhibition to place sole emphasis on his photographs in the fine arts context of the Paschke Center’s, Chicago Artist Gallery. “Paul Natkin was invited to exhibit his work at the art center before we even opened our doors,” said Vesna Stelcer, chair of the Ed Paschke Foundation. “Paul and Ed were friends who bonded over a love of sports, although they’re both huge music fans as well. Similar to Paschke, Paul is a downtoearth, hard worker with a bluecollar background. We’re thrilled to bring viewers his Superstars.”
The Ed Paschke Art Center is located in Chicago’s Jefferson Park neighborhood, at 5415 W. Higgins Ave., Chicago IL. It was built in tribute to Chicago’s most famous artist, and provides permanent access to the world’s largest public collection of Paschke’s work. EPAC houses 2,800 square feet of gallery space and 1,700 square feet of educational space, alongside a reimagining of Ed Paschke’s 2004 studio. The permanent collection showcases the Ed Paschke Family Foundation’s holdings of the many styles and periods Paschke explored throughout his artistic career, which spanned from 1969 to 2004.
The Chicago Artist Gallery is dedicated to exhibiting the work of Chicago artists, organizations and communities. The Ed Paschke Art Center is proudly funded by The Rabb Family Foundation.
