Perkolator to exhibit “Looking Glass” abstractions by Jody Magrady
Northwest side neighbor, photographer, Jody Magrady will be on hand September 19 to meet fellow art lovers at Perkolator. Part of a six-week showcase of Magrady’s work, the exhibit is the seventh in an ongoing series of events promoting the work of artists who live in the area. The reception will give patrons a chance to see intriguing images by the accomplished photographer, that will be shown for the first time at this exhibit.
Magrady’s “Looking Glass” project began in 2008 when she discovered an overgrown conservatory made of textured wavy glass. She recalls, “I loved looking through my viewfinder- through the glass to the distorted world within. It felt like looking into an otherworldly snow globe.” “Looking Glass – Series 1” is one distillation of some images from 3 visits to that first overgrown conservatory.
Magrady’s work, reframes, and reimagines the translucent barrier and what exists behind it. Her images look through to what is really there, but distorted, hidden, and camouflaged by glass, light, color, and even one’s imagination. She says, “It is also like a mirror, that may reflect something about me, and may reflect something about the viewer. It also refers to Alice and the other worlds she found when she walked “Through the Looking-Glass.” Magrady also finds other “worlds,” first when she photographs, and later, when she contemplates what she saw and what the camera recorded.”
Jody Magrady earned her Master of Fine Arts Degree in Photography from the University of Illinois at Chicago. After a 30 year career in Information Systems, she became an adjunct photography professor at Columbia College Chicago. She also taught photography at The Art Center, Highland Park, Illinois. She has exhibited in the Midwest and online. Her photographs are in corporate and private collections.
Magrady’s work is on display from August 18 through September 30, with a reception on September 19, from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Perkolator is located at 6032 W. Irving Park Rd. The exhibit is a collaboration between Perkolator, and Northwest Arts Connection, (NAC).
