In A Little World of Our Own, a Tense Whodunit, Comes to the Den Theatre on March 2nd

In a Little World of Our Own is about three brothers, one of whom “must pay for a heinous crime.” Irish Theatre of Chicago calls it, “A wry, moral and psychological thriller.”

Mark Twain coined the phrase “Write What You Know.”  Northern Ireland’s preeminent playwright, Gary Mitchell, sets his play, In a Little World of Our Own, in Northern Ireland, a place he knows well.  Mitchell was born in 1965 in Belfast, Ireland, a city at the heart of warring violence for almost a century.  His play iis set “Post Troubles,” meaning it takes place after that turbulent era.

“After-the-Troubles” (or “Post Troubles”) is obviously too simplistic a term to describe the period of recovery after the terrorism and gang violence that resulted from divisive loyalties in Ireland.  The director of this production, Irish Theatre of Chicago’s Jeri Frederickson, points out that families there lived their lives in a world of segregated communities and almost constant terrorism.  She said that this caused “a driving need to protect the community they know.”  Frederickson adds that the play addresses “the fallout from living so long with violence and gang mentality” and that this issue “strikes right at the core of the family depicted in this play.”  In this setting, In Little World of Our Own is a psychological thriller.  It’s a whodunit and the stakes are high.

The remarkable, award-winning Irish Theatre of Chicago (ITC) now brings this penetrating play to the Northwest side of Chicago for its Midwest premiere through April 10th.  ITC’s mission, in part, is “to strive to provide an atmosphere where all theatre artists – actors, playwrights, directors and designers – have the support and assurance to collaborate openly.”

Playwright Gary Mitchell has written many plays for the stage as well as an award-winning radio play.  In 1998, In A Little World of Our Own won the Irish Times Theatre Award for best new play.

In a Little World of Our Own will be directed by Jeri Frederickson, associate artistic director for Irish Theatre of Chicago and a successful, recognized ensemble member who writes and edits, directs, and curates.  She received the Brad Williams Memorial Award just before graduating Hope College with a B.A. in Theatre and Creative Writing.

The production features ITC company members Jeff Duhigg, Matt Isler, Rob Kauzlaric and Jodi Kingsley.
