27 Apr Groszek Garden Party 2016—Celebrating Home
Several years ago the Groszeks decided to directly benefit their community by throwing a large Garden Party every summer to benefit a local non-profit organization. Jennifer says, “Sometimes people ask why I do this, but I am surprised by the question. Why wouldn’t I do everything I can to help my community?” Furthermore, she sees it as “our opportunity to highlight the generosity, strength and commitment so many people have to making Chicago a great place to live.”
Each July they transform their outside area and gated parking lot with live music, cocktail tables with linens, hors d’oeuvres, wine, and abundant flowers under a high peaked white tent with twinkling lights. Many ladies wear fascinators (see below for Jennifer’s new confection), reflecting the joy of the old-fashioned “garden party.”
This year the Groszeks are thrilled to be working with LYDIA Home Association/Safe Families. LYDIA’s vision: LYDIA wants every child to be loved and cared for. Its mission: Strengthen families to care for children and care for children when families cannot.
In honor of over 100 years of children and family care, LYDIA has launched Celebrating Home, a year-long campaign of events and celebrations to help resource the ever-growing needs of children as it prepares for its next century of care.
Based on the Northwest Side of Chicago, LYDIA provides multiple services: a residential treatment program for local children who are wards of the state and have been scarred by severe abuse and/or neglect; two accredited, non-traditional high schools for students who have encountered academic adversity and find themselves in need of that one last opportunity; individual and family counseling; pre-school and day care; specialized foster care; and—the youngest and fastest-growing program—Safe Families for Children. Safe Families is an innovative approach that provides extended family-like support for desperate families through a community of devoted volunteers who are motivated by compassion to keep children safe and, ultimately, together with their families.
The evening includes an art auction featuring Chicago artists. Some lucky bidders will enjoy works by Juan Carlos Frias, T. J. Hine, Linda Lavenda, Patti Melzer, Keith Pollok, Laura Marie Sanchez, Randy Schreiber, Greta Schutt-McDonald, Kasia Szczesniewski, and Piotr Wolodkowicz.
Once again there will be photo opportunities in the Groszek’s 1974 gold VW convertible bug. Recently they announced that the VW bug photo op sponsorship is going to City Smiles. The Groszeks thank Dr. Simon and City Smiles for supporting the Garden Party.
Chicago music legend Stann Champion will be performing. Chicago Music Awards (CMA) recently selected him for a “Lifetime Achievement Award for more than 35 years of contributions to the music industry and community.” The Groszeks thank him “for supporting the Garden Party in this very special and generous way!”
Culinary delights of the Northwest side will be featured from a variety of restaurants: Chief O’Neill’s; Manne Thai; Lou Malnati’s; Hot Woks Cool Sushi; Shokran; Bistro 6050 and Delightful Pastries.
Past attendees talk about how much fun they had. One adds, “It is a great networking opportunity because everyone on the Northwest Side is there.”
