27 Sep Shakespeare All-Stars coming to Avondale
You might know that 2016 is the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, but did you know that Avondale’s name comes from Stratford on Avon where the great Bard was born and died? That’s only one of the reasons Shakespeare All-Stars was invited to perform at the A Day in Avondale festival Saturday, October 1.
We’ve come a long way in 400 years. In Shakespeare’s day playgoers paid a penny to stand in the uncovered yard of a playhouse or two pennies to sit in the balcony. On October 1st, if you visit the outdoor Woodard Plaza at the intersection Diversey, Kimball, & Milwaukee, you’ll enjoy Shakespeare All-Stars’ 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. performance, and you won’t have to pay a penny!
Shakespeare All-Stars is a small devoted team of theatre artists and educators who love Shakespeare and strive to make his classic works accessible and fun for everyone— including children as young as three years old who understand his stories very well, laughing in all of the right places, and frowning at just the right time. It’s amazing that 400 years after his death, people from every walk of life and at every age still feel a connection between his characters’ lives in Tudor times and our lives in modern times.
The All-Stars present fast-paced, interactive touring performances, in-class workshops, and after-school enrichment programs at schools, parks, libraries, special events, and community centers in and around Chicago. They are particularly fond of Chicago’s Northwest Side because of its audiences’ warm reception of their performances at Logan Square and Independence Park farmers markets, at Six Corners Association’s BBQ Fest, and at Prop and Filament theatres. Great theatre is happening off Chicago’s Blue Line, and they want everyone to know it.
