Chicago Artists Interpret Shakespeare: As They Like It: July-August 2017

Chicago Artists Interpret Shakespeare: As They Like It: July-August 2017

Chicago Artists Interpret Shakespeare describe As They Like It as “a large traveling group exhibit of work based on the plays and poetry of Shakespeare, freely interpreted by Chicago area artists. The Principal Curator is Anne Farley Gaines. Artists Robert Kameczura and Maureen Warren are Assistant Curators. The mission of this exhibit is to promote intellectual discourse and creative education, to raise interest in the work of Shakespeare, and to showcase the talents of Chicago area artists.” The diverse interpretations inspire works in many mediums and styles.

The works have been shown all over the Midwest. Water Street Studios is the 10th venue. Each showing adds new art and artists and new interpretations. This one looks fascinating.

Earlier showings have been widely praised. One was named “Pick of the Week” by the Chicago Tribune. Another was featured on the WTTW documentary, “Our City, Our Shakespeare,” which was nominated for an Emmy Award.

The Sleep of Hermia by Robert Kameczura

The exhibition includes “The Sleep of Hermia,” a photograph by Northwest Side artist Robert Kameczura. The work portrays one of the “Midsummer Night’s Dream” lovers. Robert says she “is lost in the forest on a magic summer night; she falls asleep under a spell and is surrounded by fairies who circle her as she sleeps.” It radiates a magical, romantic quality that characterizes much of Robert’s work.
