Shapeshifters Theatre continues its monthly staged readings this February in the Fifth Province Pub. Sean O’Casey’s “Dublin Trilogy” continues with “Juno and the Paycock”.
“Juno and the Paycock” tells the story of how the Irish Civil War affects the dysfunctional Boyle family, residents of the working class tenements of Dublin in the early 1920s. The ambitions of the Boyles are set against the political and social events of the Irish Civil War in 1922.Juno, the matriarch tries to keep her family together while it is being pulled apart by growing political unrest. Her husband, Captain Jack Boyle drinks away his days with his side-kick Joxer Daly, while their children fail tragically in their search for a better life.
When the family learn of an inheritance from a distant relative, it seems that their problems will be solved, but will they manage to transcend the events that conspire to keep them from a better life?
“Juno and the Paycock” is Monday, February 1. The Fifth Province opens at 6pm and the reading begins at 7pm. The audience is invited to stay for a post-show discussion with director Elizabeth Ellis and the cast. Patrick and Karen Cannady and Friends will play traditional Irish music before and after the reading.
