Last year marked the 5th Annual Avondale Restaurant Crawl, presented by Northwest Arts Connection and Avondale Neighborhood Association. New Orleans style jazz band, Four Star Brass Band, kicked off festivities at Brands Park, parading happy, hungry tasters along the crawl route. Guests went restaurant to restaurant enjoying tastes prepared by participating culinary artists and enjoying a lively arts scene along the way.
One of our favorite touches to this crawl was the Travelin’ Trolley that was offered to those who would rather ride from restaurant to restaurant. Our very talented friends from Marianne; The Imaginary Band entertained riders with their irresistibly fun music.
Local arts were woven throughout the Crawl experience, featuring some of our beloved local musicians, dancers, theater performers, authors, visual artists—and some very special dogs that entertained guests during check-in at Brands Park. The event truly connects artists with the community and with each other.
A happy taster noted, “It was fun! We enjoyed the food, entertainment, and friendly people we met along the way.” Another said, “I had no idea there were so many restaurants along Elston Avenue. I can’t wait to go back.”
The Crawl aims to shine a light on the Avondale neighborhood and its many charming and wonderful advantages.
Past guests are disappointed to hear we will not be presenting the Crawl this year, due to transitions both hosting organizations, Northwest Arts Connection and Avondale Neighborhood Association, are undergoing. We all look forward to playing together again in 2019.
The crawl will feature some of our beloved favorites including BrewBrew Coffee & Tea, Chief O’Neill’s, Honey Butter Fried Chicken, Parachute, Fruit Paradise & Taqueria Traspasada. NEW this year: DMen Tap, Dell Cove, La Farine Bakery, Mirabella, Paleteria Acro Iris, Red Apple, and Pisolino‘s — each unique in culinary style but similar in passion.
Local performers will be woven throughout the crawl experience. This year we welcome 9 time CMA Award Winning artist and Chicago legend Stann Champion, dancer/choreographer Ginger Jensen‘s world premiere of “Dandelions”, UpBeat Music and Arts student musicians & teachers, garage folk band Rent Party, the vocal stylings of Hassan El-Tayyab, and of Noah Arroyo who will be accompanied by Moises Pacheco.
But — wait — there’s more!
Chicago Creative Coalition’s spring art show is not to be missed. Crawl guests are invited to stop by Arts on Elston (3446 N Albany across the street from Chief O’Neill’s) to meet some amazing artists and enjoy their work as well as tasting unusually seasoned organic popcorn from Dell Cove Spice Co.

Had a good time tonight, everyone! As a Chicago resident of 11 years, I had no idea that Avondale had so many tucked away gems! Thanks for showing them to me.

I personally want to thank all of you for your support of young artists and your hard work in pulling this show together. It really does mean a lot to the students and their parents. Schools need the support of these outside organizations and the feedback was just great from both parents and students. I cannot thank you enough and I appreciate your time spent at the show with the parents and especially the students. God bless your efforts and you continue this work.

The trolley was full of dancing, music, and fun!

This was a great event! Loved the entertainment and was impressed by the organization and food from all places except one: At 8:15 Parachute had just a Horchata drink and had apparently stopped serving popcorn because "they thought no one was coming"... Sort of lame, but everywhere else was great! We really enjoyed the event

I take seriously the art making, as an artist I think is the best way to express our inner soul in a beautiful way. Thank you guys to help promote the arts between our youth, they need it.

When NAC partnered with City News Café on National Small Business Saturday they helped create a welcoming sense of place and a magical experience for all that came into the store.

Thanks again for including UpBeat and our students at Around the Corner 2016. It was a great opportunity for students to perform and get more connected with the local music and arts community.
Scott Barbeau, Upbeat Music & Arts
Around The Corner has literally been a life-changing experience for me. It provided me with a taste of what it’s really like to be a professional artist showing in a gallery setting. It also introduced me to many important people, even some who became mentors to me.
Amanda Jablonka, student artist
It was a wonderful event. Very nice to see all the students stand proudly by their work displayed in such a lovely space.
Keith Pollok, Steinmetz H.S. After School Matters
I’ve had a lot of people literally laugh in my face when I mention I’m trying to do art professionally and I’m going to art school. The first Around the Corner show was really emotional for me because I had multiple people come up to me and give me support. Although I receive support from close friends and family, the positive feedback I received that day felt especially special. They’re good people there, and I appreciate them a lot.
Mialis Mercado, student
Thank you for your investment in our students and our community... All of us at Lydia Urban Academy are so grateful to for the opportunity we had to participate in Around the Corner 2015. Our students were treated with such respect and encouraged to grow as individuals and artists. To have such positive interactions with adults in the community is priceless. Thank you for continuing to include us in this wonderful experience as you begin planning the second annual event.
